機械密封彈簧壓縮量測量直接用卡尺測是，先測量在自由狀態下的彈簧伸縮量，再測量機封安裝到位后的量，一減是壓縮量。
集裝式密封可以不用自己去定壓縮量，因為整個密封裝好時已定好了，非集裝式密封要根據不同的泵的類型來測量。
單彈簧機械密封的壓縮量為50%—70%，大概密封壓死后放開3—5mm，多彈簧(碟形簧)的壓縮量為90%左右，即機械密封壓死后放開1.5—2.5mm即可。同時還要考慮密封面的寬窄，彈簧的力度，工作時受力狀態。
調節彈簧壓縮量是為了滿足彈簧比壓，而不是為壓縮量而壓縮量，不管它是單彈簧還是多彈簧。通常，機泵機械密封的彈簧比壓大致控制在1.3—2.8kgf/cm2左右。佳取值多少要根據實際工況條件、摩擦副配對材質、補償環輔助密封圈結構型式和要與載貨系數K值相適應等等。
泵用機械密封檢修中的誤區：
(1)彈簧壓縮量越大密封效果越好。其實不然，彈簧壓縮量過大，可導致摩擦副急劇磨損，瞬間燒損；過度的壓縮使彈簧失去調節動環端面的能力，導致密封失效。
(2)動環密封圖越緊越好。其實動環密封圈過緊有害無益。一是加劇密封圈與軸套間的磨損，過早泄漏；二是增大了動環軸向調整、移動的阻力，在工況變化頻繁時無法適時進行調整；三是彈簧過度疲勞易損壞；四是使動環密封圈變形，影響密封效果。
